a meme, ’cause I feel like it

…but I’ll stash it behind a cut.

1. Who was your best friend?

I had two.  Samantha lived down the street from the school, and we participated in all the fun performing arts stuff together.  I was in her wedding.  I hear from her maybe once a year now.  Jim rode the bus with me.  We went through a lot together.  I was in his wedding, too.  And then we kind of lost touch for a couple of years.  And then we got back in touch. And he and his wife came to my wedding.  And then he moved to California to take a supah-cool new job.  Now that we’re in radically different timezones and busy, we mostly stay in touch through our online presences- blogs and LJ and Flickr and whatnot- but we try to get together when we’re on each other’s coasts.
2. What sports did you play?

…Sports?  Like, with running and competition and stuff?  Whatev.

At my school, you could take dance and split the credit between Fine Arts and PE.  It was a good deal, because it was more fun than playing kickball, and it was 5 periods of excercise per week instead of two, plus you could knock out two requirements at once.  So I did that.
3. What kind of car did you drive?

I didn’t get my license until my freshman year of college.  But I learned to drive mostly on my dad’s 95 Chrysler LeBaron.

4. It’s Friday night, where were you?

Sometimes at a play rehearsal.  Senior year I’d have been at the movie theater where I worked.  Other than that, most likely at home.
5. Were you a party animal?

Hah.  No.  My friends weren’t, either.  When we got together, the hardest substance served was Mt. Dew.  We were theater geeks and computer geeks.

6. Were you considered a flirt?

Mm, not so much.  Not that there were that many flirting opportunities.  My class of 34 had 6 guys in it, and at LEAST one of them was gay.

7. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir?

Orchestra, with a little moonlighting in the chorus, which happened to meet at the same time.  We didn’t have a band.

8. Were you a nerd?

It was a prep school.  At least 50% of us were nerds.  And it was 100% socially acceptable.

9. Did you get suspended/expelled?

No.  I’ve been a goody-goody pretty much forever.

10. Can you sing the fight song?

We didn’t believe in fighting.  It’s so… aggressive.  (True story: I only remember there being one fight during my four years of high school, and as punishment, the guilty parties weren’t suspended- they had to get up in front of the entire high school at our regular assembly period and explain why fighting is wrong and is a bad way to resolve conflict.  No shit.)

11. Who was your favorite teacher?

Mrs. Evans, who I took three history classes from.  She was awesome.  I learned so much- she traveled extensively and had lots of stories about the parts of the world we were studying.  Also, Mrs. Holmes was an excellent drama teacher- I always enjoyed her classes.

12. What was your school’s full name?

The Winchester Thurston School
13. School mascot?

We were the Bears.  I think we got a bear-suit my senior year?
14. Did you go to prom?

Three times, in fact.

15. If you could go back and do it over, would you?

You couldn’t pay me enough to be a teenager again.  However, if I woke up one day and suddenly discovered that I was 14 again, I would console myself with the fact that I did actually have a pretty great high school experience, and as shitty as it is to be at that stage of life, I had it pretty good.

16. What do you remember most about graduation?

I remember listening to Anji give her speech, and looking around at my classmates, and wondering, “What am I going to do without these guys next year?” Of course, I know we all got over that feeling pretty quickly.

17. Where were you on senior skip day?

We actually organized a trip to Cedar Point in Ohio.  I rode roller coasters ALL DAY.
18. Did you have a job your senior year?

Worked in the concession stand of a movie theater.  It was hellish, but now I always say please and thank you to people who work at food counters.

19. Where did you go most often for lunch?

Uh… the cafeteria?  We were allowed off-campus for lunch during midterms and finals, but I generally didn’t venture too far.

20. Have you gained weight since then?

Um, yeah.  And that’s all I’m going to say about it.

21. What did you do after graduation?

That night, I went out to dinner with my family.  Probably something like Chili’s or Applebees or something like that.  That summer was spent working at the movie theater and writing thank-you notes for graduation gifts.  Oh, and going to my friends’ graduation parties. :D

22. When did you graduate?

June 6, 1996.

23. Who was your senior prom date?

Mariel Isaacson. Yeah, I took another chick to prom.  This was completely socially acceptable at my school and no one even questioned your sexual orientation for it.  Since we had such a skewed boy/girl ratio, prom was more of a fancy party than a date-oriented event.  And Mariel was in 10th grade and couldn’t go without an upperclassman as an escort, and we were close, and the boy she had wanted to ask her to prom hadn’t done so.
24. Are you going to your 10 year reunion?

I went in October.  It was fun.  I wrote about it.

25. Who was your home room teacher?

Mrs. Reaves.

My high school also only had one fight in the four years I was there. Senior year, the valedictorian/VP of the debate club and the salutatorian/president of the debate club had an argument over who was the better debater and I think they both lost, because it ended with violence.

I think they got a handful of JUGs and detentions (JUG = 1 hour spent writing lines, detention = 2 hours of sitting in a room silently while periodically a member of the clergy reminded you what it is that you were supposed to be thinking about.)
