Cute Overload: Snailio flipbook

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

Now, I don’t generally link to Cute Overload, preferring just to keep it in my feedreader for my daily dose of gratuitous cuteness. But today, they’ve got a series of photos that is not only cute, but also really impressive. Check out a snail crossing a gap that’s almost as big as he is at Cute Overload: Snailio flipbook.

Here we go again…

Hey look! Another unpatched Windows flaw that could lead to all kinds of nastiness in the future! And Microsoft hasn’t figured out how to patch it yet! And it’s almost impossible to defend against!

It affects versions of Windows at least as far back as Windows 98, too.

You know what I realized yesterday morning?

There are less than 5 1/2 months left before the wedding. And we have no real plans.

You know what I realized 30 seconds later, after the first wave of panic passed?

The whole point of having it in June was that we don’t want a wedding that requires a lot of complicated planning.

(Yes, we’ve decided to go with the June 10 date. Just for the sake of simplicity. And yes, we’re telling Glen Echo Park to take a flying leap.)

Toolbox

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

So there’s this whole renewed kerfluffle about whether or not Robert Scoble is or is not a tool.

I’m going to place my vote squarely in the “tool” column. Not because he works for Microsoft- I know several wonderful people who work for Microsoft- and not because of the post that started the whole thing, ridiculous though it was. (Honestly, Apple’s supply issues are much different from the clusterfuck that was the Xbox 360 launch. Namely, Apple doesn’t take pre-orders more than a few days in advance of actual product availability so that they can be sure to fill them. Microsoft took pre-orders for the Xbox 360 for nearly a year before launch and then failed to deliver enough to fill half of them.)

The thing that causes me to vote a resounding, “TOOL!” is the following quote from the Scobleizer himself:

Hey, if you aren’t willing to be a bit controversial, what good is that? How boring. I guess that’s what people want me to be. Just a dutiful little boring cog in a dutiful little boring corporate machine.

Did I date Scoble in a previous life? The last adult I heard whining about what “people want me to be” and “cogs in a boring machine” was my ex, who also spent an unnatural time (mis)diagnosing everyone else’s problems while steadfastly denying that he had any of his own. Who, other than Trent Reznor, actually talks like this? (Second verse, dudes.)

People have better things to do than worry about what inconsequential cog in whatever faceless machine you are, Scoble. But when you say dumb stuff, you’re going to get called on it. That’s the point. So don’t whine about it when it happens, take the “corporate blogger” chip off your shoulder, and stop being such a tool.

It’s not you, it’s me. But really it’s you. (Updated)

Oh Technorati, you know I love you baby. But sometimes, you really piss me off.

I mean, I totally understand what you’re trying to do, and I support your choices. You want to keep track of who’s linking to whom and how popular certain blogs and topics are, and that’s great. Really baby, I love your work.

But sweetie, why is it that Every. Single. Time. I try to check out what you’ve been up to, every time I try to view my watchlist or see who’s linking to my blogs, you shut me out? How many times can a woman hear, “Sorry. We couldn’t complete your search because we’re experiencing a high volume of requests right now. Please try again in a minute or two. We’re working hard to make our search results better. Thanks for your patience.”

This isn’t a transient problem, baby, it’s a universal certainty for me.

I know, I know, you’re struggling to keep up with all you do- I know it’s hard to be a blog tracking service, what with new blogs cropping up at the rate they do. You do so much, and I hate to criticize, but…

I see from your blog that you’ve made some changes to make the results pages better. And I try to be patient, honey, really I do. But how about a suggestion from someone who loves and supports you?

How about making the service actually, you know, WORK for a change?

UPDATE: Dave Sifry, CEO of Technorati, left a comment within half an hour of my posting this to ask for information necessary in investigating the problem. Two conclusions can be drawn from this: 1. The Technorati peeps are crazy-responsive, and many thanks to them for it. 2. Technorati is clearly working for someone, even if it’s not me. So, yay, and I’ll keep you posted. :)

UPDATE THE SECOND: So I try to send email to Dave’s Technorati account, and it bounces because their email server malfing. Guys, I love you, but wtf? Jason DeFillipo, who returns to work tomorrow, said I can pass the message on to him if the problem hasn’t resolved itself by then.

Tom gave me a PS2 with Katamari Damacy for Christmas.

You may never see me again.

Except when I emerge for the other gift from Tom… a cooking class at Galileo. Even Katamari is no match for my food geekery.

For those of you who are wondering, I got Tom a charcoal grill (with chimney starter and grill cover!), which he had totally figured out ahead of time, but was excited about anyway. It’ll go well with the Omaha Steaks gift certificate I won in a contest at work…

Nativity

Originally uploaded by tbridge.

Among the gifts my parents gave to Tom and me this Christmas, I think this one may be my favorite. Tom and I each have Nativities of our own that we’ve picked up along the way, but this one is ours, and it’s lovely. Both of our mothers have substantial collections, and I infinitely prefer them to Santa-themed decorations.

There’s also an angel, but we were having trouble suspending it to put it in the photo. :)

Merry Christmas to all…

Lord, it is dark, the road is rough to go;
I lift an unlit candle in the night,
Behold it, Lord, within my upraised hand;
Touch it to flame with Thine own heavenly light.

This slender waxen thing that is my faith-
Fire it, Lord, with some divine white spark,
Until its circle, widening at my feet,
Will mark my certain way across the dark.

“Thou wilt light my candle . . . ” thus assured
I shall go forward through this unknown land;
The way can never grow too dark, too long,
For I shall bear Thy light within my hand.

Me and the Tree

Me and the Tree

Originally uploaded by tjbax.

I went with Tom and Meg to find a Christmas tree today. It was pouring rain, but we did find a nice tree, as seen here.

We took it home and decorated it, and it looks quite lovely.

This evening, the Bridges had several of their neighbors over for a little open house, and I was paid one of the best compliments I’ve ever been given by one of Tom and Meg’s friends.

He was asking me about the wedding plans, and I was expressing my general low tolerance for fussiness and bullshit, and he said,

“Wow. Sounds like Tom’s bagged himself the perfect wife.”

HAH.

the blogosphere gets hitched

Wednesday, December 21st, 2005

So with all this wedding-planning angst going on, I thought I’d start a collection of interesting writings about weddings and marriage blogged around the intarwebosphere.

Seraphic Secret: How I Married Karen: Screenwriter Robert Avrech tells the story of how he married his lovely wife, whom he had been in love with since the fourth grade. Broken into several parts.

Real Live Preacher: The Preacher’s wedding day.

opinionistas: Inspiration: O prepares for a wedding she’s actually excited about.

Smitten: The Tards from 5F Get Engaged: Deb and Alex go to Paris to get engaged.

Enjoy.
