Collective Detective #15
Thursday, July 25th, 2002The temp-to-perm gig is going pretty well. The Executive Director I am working with has only been on the job for 5 weeks. Two weeks after starting there, she had to fired the previous staff assistant. The E.D. seems to be committed to kicking ass and taking names. She has asked me to finish rebuilding the member database and reorganize the file system. Meanwhile, she’s looking at upgrading our tech (from two non-networked computers dialing into an ISP to a small network on DSL) and remodeling our office space to suit our needs better. I like her.
hurrah for solvency
Tuesday, July 23rd, 2002So while I was at the one-day temp gig today, the agent calls me up and tells me that she has a temp-to-perm gig lined up for me. Basically, it’s for an association of consumer advocacy agencies, and it’s a three person office. Of these three people:
One is a part-time payroll specialist
One is the executive director, who travels quite a bit
One is me
It’s not a ton of money, but it’ll keep me financially solvent until I can land a better job. And I’ll have an office.
Maybe I’ll even like it enough to want it to go permanent.
Oh yeah, and it’s at the opposite end of the block where Tom’s office is.
pressing onward, pushing every hindrance aside, out of my way
Tuesday, July 23rd, 2002After taking yesterday to mope around and veg out in recovery of The Rockville Disappointment, today I am temping once again downtown. Getting to work was a little smoother today than last time, but I still arrived late due to the ridiculous parking conditions at Metro stations everywhere. Dammit, there were supposed to be spaces available at Huntington. I could buy a monthly parking pass or something that would guarantee me a space, but that seems like a waste of money if I know I’m not going to need it every day. So I had to hide my car at the movie theater again. I hope it doesn’t get towed. I can’t afford that.
Today I am basically the secretary for the Managing Director of a capital fund. Everyone seems really nice, and it the work doesn’t seem too difficult, so it’s not a bad gig, I’m just bored of this kind of work and would really like to get a real job soon.
Maybe I’ll spend my downtime today drafting cover letters- I have about three places to send resumes to and I’d like to get that done quickly.
Oh, and I don’t have a timecard for today’s gig, so I have to stroll down to Randstad on my lunch break, in heels, to get one. *sigh*
bummer
Monday, July 22nd, 2002From the people in Rockville:
We have decided to move forward with one of the candidates we interviewed but it was a difficult decision. Your interview and credentials were both impressive and you were among one of our top choices. I’d like to keep your resume on file and give you a call if something changes.

Sunday, July 21st, 2002I have returned from Pittsburgh. I know you all missed me.
It was a pretty good weekend, though not as productive as I had hoped. I got my apartment in Pittsburgh all cleaned out, sold my air conditioner to some friends of my mom’s, and tried on the dress I’m wearing in Jim’s wedding for some last-minute hemming and such. These are all good things. But my slacker Pittsburgh landlord wasn’t around ALL WEEKEND and so I couldn’t turn in my keys to him or settle my security deposit. I included a note in my last rent check to inform him that this was the weekend I would be in town, and to let him know how to contact me, and yet he was still unreachable all weekend. So I had to leave the keys with my mom because I won’t be able to get back up there next weekend. Tom’s coming home from GA and I’ll be helping him pack to move to his new apartment. And I didn’t get to close my bank account up there because I got to the bank about 10 minutes after it closed. Gah. Oh well, that can wait until the weekend of the wedding, I suppose.
But I got to hang out with my parents and eat pizza and watch ridiculous Austin Powers movies and promo stuff. That was fun. And this morning I went to church with them and heard my dad preach. I hadn’t gotten to hear him in several months, so I really enjoyed that. He was preaching at a church where he had done more or less steady pulpit supply for about 2 years, so this little old lady who had been especially fond of my brother and me came up to me and gave me a hug and asked me how school was… “Well, I’ve been out for 2 years.” “From COLLEGE??” “Yes…” “Oh, where does the time go?” Heehee.
Quote of the Day:
“Sex is an animal act. The British get it all wrong, because they try to bring the dining room manners into the bedroom. And you just can’t do that- except with foreplay. Then you have to start at the outside and work your way in.” –Billy Connolly
homeward bound
Saturday, July 20th, 2002OK kiddies, I am off to Pittsburgh for the weekend to clean up the old apartment and turn over the keys. Any of you who is likely to need to reach me already knows how. If you’re a stalker, don’t try to break into my apartment, because my roommate and her specially trained attack cat will still be here to hold down the fort.
gah
Friday, July 19th, 20025:00 PM Friday and still no word from the company in Rockville. Grr. My
theory is that they’ve offered it to someone else and are keeping their
options open while they wait for that person to accept or decline.
things that made me smile today

on first

loudspeaker, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I have had a great week and I hope you
all have too. Crystal City Station, doors open to the left.”
